Evgeny Volkov - Artistic director of the Choir
Evgeny Volkov was born in Moscow in 1975. In 1995 he graduated the theoretical department of the Academic College of Music of the Moscow State Conservatory, in 2000 – choral conducting department of the Moscow State Conservatory, in 2002 – postgraduate study at Conservatory (the class of choral conducting of the People’s Artist of Russia, Professor Boris Tevlin; for opera and symphony conducting studied in class of Professor Igor Dronov). He participated in master classes of professors Erik Erikson (Moscow, 2001), Hertha Frischmuth and Gabor Hollerung (Wernigerode (Germany), 2003).
He began teaching in 2000 at the Moscow Conservatory. In 2010 – at the Department of choral conducting, since 2010 – at the Department of Contemporary choral performing arts; since 2009 – as an associate professor.
Choirmaster activity carries since 1995 (a few number of training choirs, working with diverse programs and programs in different styles). In 2002 – Gold medal award for best performance of the compulsory work, Special Prize of the International Association INTERKULTUR for the best conductor’s work at the International Choir Festival “Moscow Sounds”.
He works very successfuly with professional choirs since 2000 (concerts and archival recordings with the choir of Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, Radio and Television Choir of Wernigerode (Germany), the State Choir of the Republic of Bashkortostan).In 2006 Evgeny Volkov took 3rd place in the All-Russia competition of choral conductors in Salavat (Bashkortostan). In 2008 he prepared and performed a program of works by Slavic composers with mixed choir Song and Dance Ensemble of the PLA of China (Beijing).
Yuri Laptev – Chief artistic counselor
People’s Artist of Russia ,Soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre, Winner of International Competitions
Yuri Laptev was born in Leningrad. He studied singing with ‘People’s Artist of the USSR’ K. Laptev at St. Petersburg Conservatory, and then directing with ‘People’s Artist of the RSFSR’ R. Tikhomirov and S. Lapirov. He continued his education at Covent Garden, focusing on the organization of the creative process and the structure of the theatre business.
Since 1988, Yuri Laptev has been a director and a soloist of the opera troupe of the Kirov Opera and Ballet Theatre (Mariinsky Theatre). In the 2000/2001 season, he was a soloist at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and from 2006 – 2009 a soloist at the Bolshoi Theatre. His repertoire includes more than thirty opera roles, performing on some of the world’s great stages, including the Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden, Rome Opera, La Scala, Tel Aviv and the Concertgebouw.
As a director, Yuri Laptev made Khovanshchina at La Scala in Milan, The Maid of Pskov in the city of Pskov with the State Academic Bolshoi Theater of Russia, Boris Godunov, Prince Igor in Yekaterinburg, Rigoletto and Carmen in Rostov, Iolanta, and Mazeppa in Vyborg castle and at Ivangorod fortress. He has also directed the ‘White Nights’ ball held in various years at the Peterhof, Tsarskoye Selo, Konstantinovsky and Marble Palaces. He collaborated with stage directors Stephen Lawless, David Freeman, Graham Vick, Tim Coleman, Elijah Moshinsky (UK), Stefan Piontek (Germany), Julie Taymor (USA), as well as Emil Pasynkov, Irina Molostova, Temur Chkheidze, and Vladislav Pasi.
Yuri Laptev was chairman of the jury of the XXII Russian Festival National Theatre ‘Golden Mask’ Award for musical theatre (2016), and in 2015 and 2016 was the artistic director of the International Cultural Project ‘Russian Day in the World’.
